Quilt Preparation Checklist

Helpful guide to assist you in preparing your quilt top and backing for the longarm quilting process

  • Check for open seams. You will be charged if the quilt has open seams that need to be fixed, or it will be sent back. If the quilt does not have an outside border, it is recommended you Stay stitch slightly less than 1/4” around the edge of the entire quilt to ensure the seams do not pull apart. The stitching will be hidden once the binding is attached to the quilt.

  • Trim all loose threads on the top and underside of the quilt top. Loose threads can get caught in the quilting process causing defects in the final product.

  • Quilt top trimmed down to the final finished size. The quilt top will not be cut or trimmed by Fun2Sew Creations. Once the quilting process has finished, if requested, it can be cut for a $10.00 fee.

  • Measure your quilt across the TOP, BOTTOM, CENTER. All measurements should be the same to ensure puckers do not occur during the quilting process. Borders that do not lay flat will cause tucks, pleats or fullness. *NOTE: If your quilt is not square, no guarantee of tuck, pleats or fullness in its boarders (can’t be quilted out).

  • Backing fabric must be 4-5” larger than quilt top on ALL sides. In order for the machine head to reach the absolute edge of the quilt top, an additional clearance 4-5” is needed for the machine to clamp. There is a fee of $10.00 if fabric needs to be added. NOTE: Fun2Sew Creations has the right to refuse unfamiliar backings such as sheets or deco fabrics. All selvages should be removed from the backing fabric, as it’s much tighter than the fabric.

  • Remove all pins, buttons, charms, sequins or other embellishments from the quilt top.

  • Label the TOP of the quilt and quilt backing with a safety pin and a note attached saying “TOP”.

  • Press the quilt top and backing fabric with seams open or to one side. NOTE: Pressing service available if needed for a fee of $10.00.
